WC1 KS - Ok, no changes or tricks necessary - It is a good idea to reinstall DirectX after installing KS interface, though. WC1 - Not tested by me, reported to be working fine with dosbox

I have not tested all WC games, so please feel free to add your own experiences.

I plan on getting my p233mmx with a Voodoo 3 to work again, so I can play some of these games and others like Heavy Gear and Iwar 1. In no occasion I resorted to FAT partitions or boot disks, my goal is playing the games in WinXP or using DosBox. One final remark - For such old software, it looks like a pretty snazzy program.I'm opening this thread to collect my experiences in running the WC games in Win XP Pro. The Install.bat file tries to copy the a00-e99.cpb file from the Match folder to the Books folder, so I guess it would be a good idea to do this manually. (I verified this a second time by not even running the Install.bat file, but instead just manually deleting it.) So, first delete the Install.bat file, then Fritz should run. It seems that the Fritz2.exe file must first check to verify that the Install.bat file is not present before it will run. If you run that file, it will try (unsuccessfully, I think) to copy some files, and then it will delete itself. There's an Install.bat file in the Fritz folder. (Schroder also has a link to D-Fend Reloaded.)Īt first, I couldn't get the program to run in DosBox, until I discovered the secret. I also use the D-Fend Reloaded front end for DosBox, which makes using DosBox a lot easier.

I couldn't find the Fritz 2 download from this site, so I used the download from Ed Schroder's site: I was able to get Fritz 2 to work in DosBox (Windows 7). Save & close the configuration file, then run DOSBox and it should automatically come up with Fritz2. If you are going to use DOSBox only for Fritz2, then you can instead put "cdir c:\fritz2" (or whatever you named the directory that Fritz2 is in), then under that put the name of the. Oh you may have to put in "cdir c:\" on a line after the "mount" command, which will get you to the c:\> prompt. Put "mount c c:\dos" at the end of the DOSBox configuration file in the DOSBox folder, and then run DOSBox. So to make it easy, make a folder called "DOS" on your hard drive (assuming it will be the c: drive), then make another folder inside that one called "Fritz2" or whatever, then put the Fritz2 program in that folder. Then I can use the cdir command to go to the directory of whatever program I want to run (actually, I use an excellent DOS-based menu program called Access, and have even set up Windows 3.11 to run under DOSBox). This makes the DOS directory appear as the C:\ directory when I run DOSBox. In the DOSBox configuation file, at the very end you can add lines to act like a batch file. To run DOS under DOSBox, you have to mount the drives you want to use. To run all my DOS programs under DOSBox, I set up a directory on my hard drive called DOS in which I put all the folders containing all the different DOS programs. That's kind of like saying a Model T has more horsepower than a Corvette! I am incapable of believing that the antiquated Fritz 2 can play "more aggresively" or more anything else than any of these engines. PS: Fritz by Chess Base and Fritz Chess by Viva Media both appear to be the same thing, Fritz Chess includes older versions of Fritz.Īfter you buy one of these infinitely superior versions (because they will work under XP if nothing else) you can also download 3 free, awesome chess engines and use them with Fritz: Houdini, Firebird and Stockfish. Look in amazon for cheap versions of Fritz 11:
